The Capital City of Warsaw is a borough (Polish: gmina) with the status of a city with the rights of a county (Polish: powiat). Its functions have been set forth in the Act on Borough Self-Government and in the Act on County Self-Government; its tasks resulting from the fact that it is a Capital City have been specified in the Structure of the Capital City of Warsaw Act.
The executive body of the City is the Mayor of Warsaw, elected pursuant to the Act on Direct Election of Mayors, whereas the Warsaw City Council is the decision-making and supervisory body. The Council is elected pursuant to the Electoral Law of Borough, County and Regional Councils.
Pursuant to the Structure of the Capital City of Warsaw Act, 18 auxiliary units – Districts of the City – have been established in Warsaw.
